We choose to keep only one or two fillies each year, they are ran on grass and receive little extra feed, We do this to help us determine which of the fillies are easy keepers and truly develop themselves. The majority of the fillies are started under saddle by the time they are 3 years old, some are kept and ridden on the ranch for at least two years and then enter the broodmare band. Others are sold, to help us promote our horses; striving to meet the goal of heavy boned, correct confirmation, cow sense, athletic ability, nice disposition and excellent pedigrees. Each We After loosing Don, I was forced to find someone to start the young horses. Finding the right person, who matched our training goals was challenging. We wanted someone who believed in listening to the horse, keeping them quiet, but yet encouraging them to reach their potential. We are fortunate to have found someone that takes pride in their work and does a great job working with these young horses. Each horse is ridden for 30-60 days and then they return to the ranch. Where we continue to broaden their minds- working cattle, roping at brandings and other general ranch work. After all the best education is on the job training! Some are kept for broodmare prospects and some are sold. The fillies kept for broodmares, are not bred until they are five or older.
